We also offer free spay/neuter services to low-income LA City residents and discount coupons to any City resident for three dogs, three cats, and three bunnies per household. Some of our adoptable pets will have varied reduced prices due to having had services, which we usually provide, completed prior to coming to our shelter. We are happy to pass this savings on to the new owners.

You can buy or renew a dog license at your local veterinarian’s office, at the Pet Adoption and Protection Center or at any one of the 311 Service Centers. Dog Licenses are required for all dogs over four months of age. Low-cost vaccinations are available for your dogs and cats at the Animal Services Pet Adoption and Protection Center. To be able to offer refuge to every animal in need, open-admission shelters must euthanize unadopted and unadoptable animals.
Helping Pets
Although our intent is to adopt animals, our main concern is to make sure that animals are adopted into loving homes capable of handling the new pet. We know that providing a good home for every pet requires a host of hands-on programs for pets and their people. To set both the shelter dog and the family dog up for success, we recommend doing a meet/greet outside of the shelter environment, on neutral ground. In the best interest of assisting everyone before closing time, we will be stopping interactions 30 minutes before closing every day. If you wish to interact with any of our adoptable pets, please get to the shelter no later than 1 hour prior to closing so we can assist you with interaction and completing adoption paperwork. However, we will be checking messages hourly during the regular business hours of 8am-5pm Monday through Friday. If your pet needs a pet license then please also bring their proof of spay/neuter form with you; this way, your pet license will be $10 instead of $30. If there are 2 or more adopters at the shelter at the same time, for the same pet, starting at 11am, then a priority order drawing will take place. The selected first adopter will have a determined amount of time to interact with the pet and make a decision about adoption. We encourage the other adopters to stay nearby in case the first adopter does not complete the adoption. We also encourage them to tour the other animals available for adoption while they are here. All of our adoptable pets have been spayed or neutered, have age-appropriate vaccinations and have been treated for worms.

No shelter that truly cares for animals should ever turn its back on an animal in need, even when that means taking in animals who are diseased, badly injured, aggressive, or elderly. These animals have little to no chance of being adopted or helped by anyone else, but a responsible animal shelter should at least provide them with a painless release from a world that does not want them. Conditions at some no-kill shelters are criminal. Some don’t even make it out of the animal shelter’s parking lot.
Occasionally, large animals are available for adoption. Ordinance requires livestock be auctioned, so the animal goes to the highest bidder. Auction notices are posted at the animal shelter, and on this site ten days prior to the auction. If there are animals at home, please bring their current rabies certificates with you.
